 Writing task 1


You all might be wondering how to ace your skill in IELTS writing task 1.

I have some tips for you, kindly go through them.


Points considered in writing task 1

1. Grammatical range and accuracy

2. Task achievement

3. Lexical resource

4. Coherence and cohesion


Try to write your answers in paragraphs.


First paragraph:

Introduction to the topic

You can start with:

1. The table revels

2. The diagram illustrates

3. Some key trends are revealed by the graph showing

4. The given diagram depicts or outlines or denotes or presents information about

5. The given pictorial represents or demonstrates or compares or expresses


Second paragraph:

Introducing the set of contents

1. A glance at a graph reveals that

2. At the onset it is clear that

3. It can be clearly noticed that or observed that

4. Now turning to the details


Third paragraph

Concluding or summarizing

1. To sum up or in short

2. Agglomerating

3. Recapitulating

4. So by analyzing the diagram we can state that/ clearly stated that/ we can say that

5. To summarise the most marked change is

6. Overall it is clear 

7. Overall, the majority/ minority

8. In sum the most noticeable trend is


Note:

Don't say 'to conclude'.


Verbs to be used:

rise, increase, grow, to grow, climb, boomed, reached a peak of, declined, decrease, dip, go down, drop, remained stable, remained steady, to fluctuate, to surge, plunge, soar, leap, plummet, rocket, jump.


Possible nouns:

variation, decline, decrease, dip, drop, fall, peak, fluctuation, growth, increase, rise, slump


Possible adjectives:

dramatically, sharply, hugely, enormously, substantially, considerable, gradually, modest, significantly, moderately, slightly, rapidly, quickly, swiftly, steep, rapid


Phrases to be used:

To show an upward/ downward trend

To hit the highest/lowest peak

To reach a peak

To remain stable/static/unchanged

To reach a plateau

The most striking feature


Fractions:

73% - nearly three quarters

51% - just over a half

49% -  just under a half

32% - nearly a third

50% - exactly a half

26% - roughly one quarter

49% around half

24% - almost a quarter

77% - approximately three quarters


Proportions:

70% - a large proportion

71% - a significant majority

15% -  a small minority

3% - an insignificant minority
